The end of this season has been rough for the Portland State Vikings men's basketball squad. The numbers tell the story, and it's not a pretty one.
In the past eight games, the Vikings have gone 2-6 including tonight’s blow out loss at Northern Arizona, 79-52.
The Northern Arizona Lumber Jacks held the Vikings to one of the Vikings’ worst shooting games of the season as Portland State managed to shoot just 38.0% from the field and a dismal 30.8% from behind the arc.
Of the Vikings’ starters, only Christ Harriel and Phillip Thomas had success shooting the ball, scoring 13 points and 10 points respectively. Chehales Tapscott shot 4-10, Charles Odum 2-4 and Melvin Jones went 3-6, including 1-3 from three- a spot he’s normally very good at.
Portland State struggled to rebound the ball as well, with Tapscott the only player to grab more than 4 boards. He finished the night with 9 rebounds.
Northern Arizona, on the other hand, executed their offense from the tip, bouncing back with a dominating win after losing a heart breaker against Northern Colorado (they lost 72-71). Eric Platt , the Lumberjacks’s dynamic guard, scored 21 on 8-12 shooting, including going 5-9 from behind the three point line. As a team, the Lumberjacks shot 57.7% from the field and 55.6% from three.
The Lumberjacks controlled the boards, out rebounding the Vikings 32 -24.
The final game of the Vikings’ season will be at Seattle University Redhawks on March 10.
The Redhawks are 6-5 at home, while the Vikings are a terrible 1-10 on the road. Northern Arizona shot just 39.4% from the field on the season (the Vikings are at 43.8%). Although playing through a painful season under head coach Tyler Geving, the Vikings can end the season on a relatively high note with a win in Seattle next Wednesday night.
But the way this season has gone at Portland State, that will be no easy task.
