History Black - Day 8: Spud Webb

He was only 5’7, but he jumped among the giants.

On this date back in 1986 in Dallas, Spud Webb beat his Atlanta Hawks teammate Dominique Wilkins (and Jerome Kersey for those Blazer fans reading) to win the NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest – the shortest player ever to do so.

This coming All-Star weekend, Webb will easily be remembered much like he is today in this History Black Series - for his dunks.

Rumor has it this year in Dallas, the New York Knicks and reigning slam dunk champ Nate Robinson is going to honor Webb during the competition, much like he did when Nate put up a perfect 50 back in 2006. With Robinson nursing a groin injury though, that may not be the case now.

Even still, what Anthony “Spud” Webb was able to accomplish back in ’86 was simply amazing, let alone going on to average 9.9 points per game in 12 season for a guy no one really have a shot coming out of North Carolina State back in ’85.

A year later, Webb turned heads when he jumped out of the gym in Dallas.
