History Black - Day 5: The Junkyard Dog

jyd

Sorry to disappoint you Jerome William fans. This post and pic is dedicated to the original Junkyard Dog.

Look, we all have guilty pleasures. Old school wrestling just happens to be mine (I prefer “scripted” over “fake”).

The JYD – whose real name was Sylvester Ritter – was a dogchain sporting headliner during the WWF’s golden era of the 80’s as he headbutted his opponents around the ring.

A gridiron great, Ritter was drafted by the Green Bay Pakers out of Fayetteville State University but turned to wrestling after suffering a knee injury. Making a name for himself in several wrestling territories and companies (WWF, NWA, WCW), the Junkyard Dog had memorable running feuds with everyone from “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase,  Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and even Ric Flair.

Tragically, JYD’s life came to an end in 1998 in a single-car accident after he was returning from his daughter’s high school graduation.

He was 45 years old.

The History Black Series:

February 2: Gary Payton

February 3: Bo Jackson

February 4: Dr. J
