It's always about the game: the last-second shot over two defenders, the throw to the plate in the 9th inning, the ball that's just out of reach. It always has been, always will be.

However, I've grown increasingly interested in the periphery: the world surrounding the games that we love, the athletes, the culture of sports in Oregon and elsewhere. That's what's brought me here, why I've jumped on board with Wendell Maxey and this fresh staff. My goal as a featured writer to Beyond the Beat is to tell rich stories that provide insight, and to allow the athletes to tell their stories in order to help us understand the game and its players in depth.

I'll cover sports across Oregon, and I'll provide regular coverage on Oregon State University.

Born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I served as Editor in Chief of the Northern Michigan University student newspaper, The North Wind, while majoring in English education with minors in history and journalism. Additionally, I served as a writer and editor for the Marquette Monthly Magazine.

After completing my bachelor's degree at NMU, I moved to Roseburg, Oregon, and taught language arts and journalism at Douglas High School in Winston. I recently completed my MA in Rhetoric and Writing at Oregon State University, where I taught writing courses and served as the graduate assistant to the OSU Writing Intensive Curriculum Program. My thesis project centered on new media and the teaching of writing.

Meanwhile, I became a ravenous Blazers fan, and I began attending more and more OSU sporting events. I hope my passion for sports comes through in my writing and reporting, but I also hope that my interest in people and all our complexities serves as the foundation for how and what I cover as a writer for Beyond the Beat. It's always about the game, but the game is bigger than we sometimes know.
