Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of James “Buster” Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson.
20 years.
Seems like yesterday in many ways; watching Iron Mike search the canvas for his mouth piece in Tokyo, Japan and even remembering Buster Douglas’ steady decline after capturing the Heavyweight Boxing Championship of the World.
What a great story. What a sad story.
Out of shape and unmotivated, Buster lost his title to Evander Holyfield in 1990. He nearly lost so much more.
After reading Jemele Hill’s piece on ESPN.com about Douglas-Tyson, there is no possible way for me to follow Hill’s brilliant lead and do justice to recounting Buster’s life. But I will say this about the man: out of all the thrilling upsets and magical Cinderella stories in sports history, Buster beating Tyson is by far the greatest story ever told.
