They are forever known as the Fab Five, labeled the best class ever recruited according to some “experts” back in 1991. Baggy shorts, black socks and an “in your face” attitude, these Michigan Wolverines changed the way we looked at college basketball in the early 90’s – and even now as a tarnished legacy clouds the Fab Five memory.

Were they the best starting five ever in college? Or were the Fab Five merely part of a hoops hype machine?

Back in late October while working on a feature story for SLAMonline (“The Fab One”), Juwan Howard remembered back to his days at Michigan and didn’t miss a beat when asked what those days as a member of the Fab Five meant to him.

“I owe those guys a lot,” started Howard, who at 37 years old isn’t thinking of shutting it down any time soon.

While Ray Jackson never made it to the league, Jimmy King, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber’s time in the NBA has all passed them by. Only Juwan remains.

So do the memories.

“I owe them my life pretty much because we shared some good times together and some bad times. But more importantly those memories will never go away.”
