The Boston Celtics have hinted they are interested in making a deal for Rudy Fernandez and President Danny Ainge acknowledged he is pursuing trade options for the disgruntled Blazer, but that nothing yet is imminent.

After announcing that he was done with the NBA and after receiving a $25,000 fine, it’s hard to imagine Rudy being interested in playing for any team that’s not in Spain. However, with the Celtics poised to possibly begin a rebuilding stage in two years, Rudy may finally get his chance to move into the starting lineup of an NBA team, which might be reason enough for him to stick around.

The question now is, what deal will the Celtics propose?  A trade offer of the team’s 2011 first round draft pick has reportedly already been turned down, putting pressure on Ainge to decide whether or not to up the ante. The only player that stands out as potentially being included in a simple swap is recently-drafted Texas point guard Avery Bradley. But that's the problem: the Blazers are already loaded at the point, leaving Ainge and Portland at a stand-still. If you were Ainge, what offer would you make?

The Portland Beavers - who have now won eight-straight games on the road - aren't leaving town without making some noise first. The Beavers picked up their fifth win in a row Wednesday night, with Cory Luebke taking the mound and pitching eight shutout innings against the Tacoma Rainiers. In the win, he improving his scoreless streak to fifteen innings and his personal record to 5-0.

A new Big Sky rivalry is brewing between the Portland State Vikings and the Eastern Washington Eagles.  Being named the “Dam Cup” – which refers to the four dams between the two schools that link Oregon and Washington -- the rivalry will feature competition within five sports: football, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s basketball and men’s basketball. Points will be awarded for each win and at the end of the year, the school with the most points will be awarded the Dam Cup Trophy.

The goal behind the Dam Cup is to increase competition, school pride, and attendance. Portland State Director of Athletics Torre Chisholm is already getting the trash talking started, declaring that, “It has always been enjoyable when we beat Eastern Washington. This should make it even better."

Today is the last day of summer training camp for the Oregon Ducks football team and will include the team’s first full scrimmage of the new season.  The coaches have still not decided on a starting quarterback, making the scrimmage especially intriguing, as it may be the last chance for candidates Nate Costa and Darron Thomas to stand out.

The Oregon Athletic Department has also announced that this Saturday, August 28th, will be the 2010 “Fan Day,” a time for fans to meet the team’s players and coaches.  It will be held inside the Moshofsky Center and will run from noon until 2pm.

Pending league and USFF approval, the Portland Timbers have signed defender Kevin Goldthwaite for the remainder of this year's season.  Goldthwaite played for the Timbers while on loan to the team in 2005, when he played in ten matches and was an asset to the team in making a playoff appearance that year.  Other career highlights include being named the New York Red Bull’s defender of the year in 2008 and helping the Houston Dynamo win their first MLS Cup in 2005.
