What's The Real Story With Rudy?

Here we go….more ammunition for speculation about Portland’s alleged unhappy and unhealthy locker room.

When it was learned prior to tip-off against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night that Rudy Fernandez was a last minute scratch from the Blazers lineup, something seemed unusual.

Back trouble is nothing to take lightly (take it from someone who knows), so it’s no joke when word came from Portland that Fernandez was suffering from sciatic pain in his back. However, what is odd is the lingering results of his MRI (which he was expected to undergo on Saturday night) and his status going forward as the Oregonian’s Jason Quick described prior to the start of Portland/New York on Monday night.

To simplify the report: the Blazers and Fernandez are seeking a second opinion, although Kevin Pritchard would not confirm that report. Pritchard also said when asked that he couldn’t remember if Fernandez had an MRI done. Brandon Roy was told Rudy would miss games in New York and Indiana, while interim head coach Dean Demopoulos is uncertain of Fernandez’ status.

Cleary, the organization is not “on message”.

Instead, the door is now open for rumor winds to blow freely about Rudy’s overall health and happiness with his role and minutes in Portland.

This isn't the first time Rudy's name has been associated with an injury or even being unhappy with his situation in Portland (see the offseason story about him being upset about Hedo Turkoglu coming to the Blazers).

Something tells me this isn't the last we'll hear of it either.

Update: Looks like that second opinion involves surgery for Rudy Fernandez with the Blazers saying he'll undergo a procedure today to alleviate nerve pressure that is causing leg pain.

A timetable for his recovery will be determined after the procedure.

When reached via email for a comment about Fernandez' eventual return, Gerard Darnes - one of Rudy's agents along with Andy Miller - said the Blazers will inform everyone as soon as they have the information and would not specify when the procedure took place at Southwest Washington Regional Surgery Center in Vancouver, Wash..

According to Jay Allen of Portland's 95.5FM, doctors are saying recovery time could be anywhere from 6-12 weeks for full recovery from this procedure.

Just pathetic. You know it's cuz of Roy, cuz he's not been getting his touches. Get ready for a blowup Portland. Brandon Roy is NOT who you think he is. He's fake and time will reveal his true face.

i highly doubt brandon roy is the root of trouble with rudy, if there really is any trouble. sorry. not buying that one.
or........maybe he's just having back pains?

You mention 3 specific people being "off message"

Pritchard--is probably more worried about Oden right now.
Dean Demo--was probably more worried about getting ready to coach a game.
B.Roy--is not Rudy's keeper.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Rudy isn't going to miss a bball trip just because of trade rumors.

How did you know Rudy was upset again? Sure, he was upset on the Turkoglu situation, but that doesn't mean hes upset again now. You assumed , just like BRoys assumption on when Rudys coming back. This article is a drama. Relax

easy jman....there is no drama here. again, i'm simply wondering if we have all the details. i've reached out to one of rudy's agents - gerard darnes - to help clarify to injury and rudy's overall outlook in portland. just waiting for him to reply.

according to blazers, rudy will miss 4 to 6 weeks.....

4-6 weeks!...Someone please step up. I feel like Portland gets the most "deer caught in headlights" moments. Maybe its just my high expectations for them. However, Rudy's injury is going to a cause a big rift in Portlands already lack luster flow of offense. Something has to change and all these injuries everywhere are prolonging the organizations plans of actually making a stable team for the future. Trade is imminent, but I doubt its going to be Rudy. As a big Portland Rebirth team fan I hate to see anyone go, but something has to be done..

you've got the floor here. what would you like to see happen?

do they make a move now, later in february at the deadline, or just ride out the injuries and perhaps count the season a loss?

there is still a lot of basketball to be played. is the playoffs still realistic?

I just read an article regarding Blazers as dominant force before and now into underdogs. I never believed they were ever dominant.Yes, dominant in rebounds, but never dominant in scoring. This showed in the last years playoffs in a dismal series lost against Houston and when they did win games in that series it wasn't by much and it was because of a big burst of BRoy. To be honest considering Aldridge a second option is laughable. Hes a just a tall shooter. (PLEASE DEVELOP!!) To win lots of games you need penetration inside, which Portland only has one (BRoy). They need someone willing to drive or play inside. Plain in simple jump shooting teams never make it to the top. For some reason I feel a sense of urgency and we should. Hype on talented abundant teams don't last forever. To answer your question we have lots of talent but now its time to solidify the team. This can only be done by getting another playmaker. Do I think Pritchard is trying his ass off ? Yes, hes one of the most aggressive GMs but just like the draft and the offseason, we couldnt get S*** done. And for that I feel urgency to prove our teams value. I hope they make it to the playoffs but pessimistic feelings looms around the corner.. Playoffs outlook is hazy..unless either divison rival Deron Williams gets injured again (horrible of me to wish this, I love Deron) or a trade happens. Its a dream but a realistic one.

I am confused as to what a trade is going to do for the Blazers at this point. The past two years they have been in a great bargaining postition and have not pulled the trigger on "the big trade" some fans keep waiting for. Why would they make a trade now that they have lost all or most of their bargaining position? Miller is about all they have left who would bring anything of value back and nobody else wanted him in the summer. So If you add Webster, Bayless, Howard, Cunningham, Przybilla, or Blake to Miller what can you realistically bring back? A 2 for 1 or a 3 for 2 will leave you with 8 players? How will making a deal like that and then signing a D-Leaguer or older player still without a contract make the team better? Unless someone wants Outlaw as an expiring contract?? What kind of realistic moves can they make?
