Mason In Portland....Just Not A Blazer

mason2

Allow me to clear up some Desmond Mason talk real quick, since I just wrote about him in a blurb for HOOPSWORLD. Yes, he’s in Portland. And no, he’s not a member of the Blazers.

Mason - who missed the second half of last season in Oklahoma City with knee trouble - has been working out at the practice facility lately as he waits for a free agent call to see where the brawny 6’5 small forward will play this coming season. While Mason resides in Portland during the offseason, sources have told me the Blazers and Mason’s camp are not in discussions, nor have they been.

Mason’s “PF” workouts are in the same light as they have been the past few summers. Local guys like Freddy Jones, Luke Jackson and Ime Udoka – and including some of the Blazers who live around Portland – sprinkled about the NBA flock to the open gym policy instituted by Kevin Pritchard.

This isn’t new news here folks.

Let’s put it another way: Mason is working out….but he’s not being worked out.

Desmond simply happens to be a regular; a regular who also happens to be a veteran free agent who is known as one of the tougher guys in the league.

Tempting.

Mason Update:

I received an email this morning from Chris Tomasson - formerly of the now defunct Rocky Mountain News and who is writing these days for FanHouse - about Mason and his destination. According to Tomasson, the Nuggets met with Mason recently and the two appear to be nearing a free agent deal. Just what Portland doesn't need - a division foe adding a tough veteran. His knees are said to be iffy, but if they are not....Mason could prove a wise investment.

Heard you left Hoopsworld....now I have no reason to go there anymore. BTW when you finish your book on Negro League Baseball you should tell me where the best place is to pick up a copy of it.
Anything in the tank?
written by Can't Jump, September 02, 2009
Do you think he still has anything left in the tank to offer Portland? I don't know much about Mason's game. Does he compare more to Dante Cunningham or Pendergraph?

Also, I read about your parting with Hoopsworld on the BE website. I'll miss you there, but hope that you have even greater success with your future endeavors. God Bless...
big thanks

thanks for getting at me and for the kind words. getting ready to write a quick blog post about my departure from hoopsworld so i won't beat that horse here. just know it was time to move on....time to grow.

as for mason, i'm getting ready to update the entry. yeah, his knees may be iffy at best but don't be shocked to see him land to a division foe of portland's

i believe that.....know he's been hobbled by the knee issues, but mason appears to be one of those tough vets who still has much to offer.

thanks for the line.
Why not Portland?

Always wondered why we didn't give Des a tryout at least. He's a P-Town resident, and he's been pretty good in the past. Maybe because we've already got plenty of SF's?
