I didn’t think we’d hear Carlos Arroyo’s name associated with Portland, but it just goes to show the Blazers are most certainly keeping their options open.
I just detailed the situation over at HOOPSWORLD with Portland and Arroyo so I won’t do so here.
But let’s be clear though, Arroyo’s camp – led by super agent Leon Rose – did speak with representatives for Portland late last week in Las Vegas while Carlos was in town supporting Israeli forward Omri Casspi at summer league for the Sacramento Kings.
The league executive did not indicate that a workout took place, as was the case with the Blazers and Sean May (who signed a one-year deal with the Kings just days ago). But he did say what Rose and his client want in a deal (to find a starting role in a two-year contract), Portland is not willing to offer.
So what can we glean from this meeting between the Blazers and Arroyo?
First, when Leon Rose talks, people listen. Plain to see Rose was working the room in Vegas and the Blazers were playing the wall. We are after all talking about a guy who represents LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Rip Hamilton and Allen Iverson among others.
And two, while Portland basically wasn’t interested in Arroyo once they discovered he wants a starting gig upon returning to the league, Blazers’ management is apparently open to speaking with one and all point guards for hire.
