Is Kidd Worth It?
Written by wendell maxey

kidd

Can you picture Jason Kidd in red, white and black? How about Andre Miller?

Because when you look at the list – and it is a long list – of free-agent point guards this summer, those are the two guys that stand out and will likely draw interest from the Blazers.

See, my plan in knocking out the “Pick Your Point Guard” piece currently running over at HOOPSWORLD was to also include a few names circulating in trade rumors, along with the free-agents I listed. You’ll notice namely Steve Nash, Kirk Hinrich and Devin Harris absent from the rundown. And chances are I’ll re-visit such speculation in the coming weeks.

Want to keep it free-agent specific for now.

I can say this: If Portland does decide to make a change at the point – and honestly, who knows if they even will – Kidd may be the wisest move. Because even if you ink him for a two-year deal, that is ample time to not only mentor Jerryd Bayless, but also  build some nice chemistry once a veteran power forward to back-up LaMarcus Aldridge is added.

As for the Andre Miller rumors, I’m sure Portland has inquired – or will inquire – but I have a hard time believing Portland has reached this point financially only to pay up for a guy like Andre Miller. Nothing against Miller. I guess when I think of building a championship caliber team, Miller isn’t the first guy that pops into my head.

Back to Kidd real quick: the New York Knicks (who can only offer him their mid-level exception of $5.5 million) will chase him. Count on it. Dallas plans on throwing money his way to get him to stay too. Bank on that.

The downfall could be in the numbers though. Kidd is 36-years-old and he may drive a steep bargain for someone who probably has a couple more years in him.

Is he worth a short-term investment?

All I’m saying is Kevin Pritchard at least has to make the call to Kidd’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, to see if there is any interest once Wednesday morning rolls around. In fact, that should be one of Pritchard’s first calls. Who knows? Maybe the price is right. Maybe Kidd's relationship with Nate McMillan holds some weight.

Maybe Kidd’s not interested at all.

But what if he is?

if Devin Harris can't be add, Kidd should be the first guy we try to sign.

Wendell,
How have his stats been the last few years and how good is his D...I can't recall if he is closer to a lockdown or an Ole' defender? If he can still defend I think he is a top if not the top candidate...despite the past incidents.

thanks for reading and writing doug....

harris is right up there with kidd in my book - maybe even a few steps ahead for the youth factor. but can harris be had? back on draft night the nets were reportedly taking calls about him and asking for expiring contracts and draft picks in return.

just not sure if that is the case now. i'm looking into it.

but for what he did for the nets, you'd think the take him off the market - if he was even on there to begin with.

what's up d.g.....been a long time.

well, his numbers - scoring wise - have dropped the last two seasons, mostly because he's not the heart of the offense any longer. and his defense, while never stellar, remains solid.

still hard to argue with his knack for a triple-double. couple that with the postseason experience and leadershhip, and some team out there will land him right away.

know some people are leary if he's a good lockerroom guy....and his past offcourt issues. but i can only tell you from my experience covering him for 3 seasons in new jersey, that jason was always well respected by the organization, coaching staff, teammates and the community.

and he was equally professional and generous when it came to the media - interview after interview. again, can only base it on what i heard, saw and experienced.

Looking forward to your take on Nash, Hinie and Harris. If Blazers mantra is toughness, who do you think fits that bill AND has the PG skill.
