Sorry Rudy....Dwight's Right

No one is ever going to confuse me with Dwight Jaynes. Something about our age and hair style. But having talked to Dwight repeatedly during the season about Rudy Fernandez, it didn’t surprise me that he feels Rudy’s long term future won’t be in Portland. He’s not alone.

I’m with Dwight on this one.

As much as it pains those in Portland to read his words from OregonLive’s “You Be The GM: Rudy Fernandez" that ran on Thursday, it’s going to hurt even more when two….three...years down the road when Fernandez is grouped in a package deal.

It’s not so much about money or the spotlight or playing time. It’s really not.

For me, it’s going to come down to wants versus needs.

If Portland – for example – doesn’t solve their lingering point guard needs (no offense Mr. Blake and Mr. Bayless) this summer or next or the year after, the Blazers might have to make sacrifices in order to get what they want – regardless of the need at the time. Yes, Portland wants Rudy to stay. The kid is smooth and brings shades of Reggie Miller to the floor the way he works off a screen and hits from outside. He knows his defense needs work too. That will come, albeit slowly.

But his stability and staying power around Rip City may not be the reality down the road.

Might as well begin to embrace that possibility now.

If not, at least nestle up along side of it for a bit.

Rudy''s the best trade bait that the Blazers have and are probably willing to negotiate with. They need a one and the three addressed and I would lean towards focus on an all star caliber one that can not only dribble penetrate & dish, but play lock down D on their man too. Blake doesn't do those things well enough and it has been an achilles heel for the Blazers. Trading Rudy may be a mistake because a playoff team needs a big shot Bob sort of guy to hit dagger 3's but moving him may make the most sense.

will be interesting to see what role he heads coming out of training camp. could be very telling of his tenure here.

Yup. If Rudy is the price to pay for getting a legitimate starting backcourt mate to pair with Brandon, that can help initiate the offense, hit the timely shot and most importantly help LMA and Greg get easier looks in the post then KP has to be willing to use his assets.

I'm feeling shades of Drazen emerging with Rudy, who was also stuck behind an all-NBA shooting guard.

thanks for the line r.r.f.....

not sure if you thought my take was horrible, dwight's take was horrible or the previous comments left were horrible.

if the beef is with me, let me quickly recap: do i think rudy should be moved? no. do i think he will play out his career in portland and retire a blazer? no. his window in portland is open.....but it will only be a few years before it closes.

as for me, i'm not going anywhere.

what's up nj....long time no talk.

i'm digging the drazen comparison, at least along the lines of rudy's place on the roster (rudy is certainly quicker than petro was.....).

the calls will come one day and management will be forced to answer.

thanks for reading and writing.
