The Tom Penn – Minnesota Timberwolves general manager talks have reached a “holding pattern” according to Penn’s agent Warren LeGarie, whom I spoke with late Friday afternoon. So now, much like Penn, we wait for the word from the Wolves.
As I detailed over at HOOPSWORLD with a quick update, LeGarie said “the process” is in the Wolves hands, but the “nice thing in this case is he (Penn) is ready.”
I don’t think any of us doubt that knowing Penn’s resume’ and his relationship with Kevin Pritchard.
For those not familiar with LeGarie, he is the go-to agent for some head coaches (Rick Carlisle, Mike Brown, George Karl, Mike D'Antoni among others), GM's (Pritchard being one) and front office types around the league. He's also the brains behind the Las Vegas Summer League. Not too shabby.
I will say this though: I consider myself fortunate to talk with LeGarie under the circumstances. Reached out to him earlier in the day and was unsure if I’d get a call back regarding some questions I had about the Wolves courting Penn (sitting far right in the above pic FYI).
Needless to say, the words “I’m with HOOPSWORLD” doesn't hold as much weight as, “Wendell Maxey from the New York Times holding on line one” – or so I believe. Some guys working the beat around the league have told me who you are with media wise matters little.
What matters, instead, is your ability to get an interview and work a story.
I can see that. But that's my hang-up. It's funny: I’m pretty sure this was the first time I’ve ever done an interview from a playground at a nearby park. Random. I took my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter there to get some sun and fun today, and came away with a nice little scoop after talking to LeGarie for a few minutes.
Never did get a chance to kick it on the swings though.
Talk about child’s play.
