The other day someone asked me, “whatever happened to Latrell Sprewell?” Without missing a beat, I shot straight: You don’t want to know. It’s just one of those sad stories that litter the league. It got even sadder on Wednesday night.
It’s been nearly five years since Sprewell donned an NBA jersey, and just as fast as his star soared with the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves, it fell even faster. The Sprewell most of us know – or at least think we know – is the one with his hands firmly placed around P.J. Carlesimo’s neck.Then there was “the quote”.
Minnesota had just offered Latrell a three-year deal (contract extension actually) in 2004 worth $21 million. He felt slighted. He declined the offer. He shouldn’t have gone there.
“I have a family to feed,” Sprewell said back then.
It went downhill from there. A year later Latrell was out of a job.
Sprewell’s offcourt laundry list is well documented – straight out of a Bravo reality TV show: a restraining order placed against him in 2006, a $200 million dollar lawsuit for child support in 2007, repossessions of property, defaulted mortgage and unpaid taxes after unpaid taxes all in 2008.
God help him. The pain keeps piling up.

“Father of ex-NBA player killed in crash”
Milwaukee, WI - Authorities say the father of former NBA player and Milwaukee area resident Latrell Sprewell was one of two motorcyclists killed in separate accidents in Milwaukee.
A medical examiner's report said Sprewell's 62-year-old father, Latoska R. Fields, died after his motorcycle hit an SUV that turned left in front of him about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday. Police said they are investigating whether to charge the SUV driver.....
The losses continue to mount for Sprewell, this one more heartfelt than any other.
It’s just a sad story.
