I’d been considering running a new series for HOOPSWORLD and wasn’t sure which direction to go. But being a bit of a history buff, rolling out “NBA Flashback” was true to my form.
I wanted to produce something that gives a break from the rumor and opinion pieces some websites has become known for. I wanted to tell some stories – about people, past events, historical games that often get lost in the constant game of chasing league-wide rumors and "Top 5" lists.
But this wasn’t the last of the heartache for the Suns that year.
Later in 1987, Nick Vanos – a 7’1 center whom played two seasons for the Suns – died in a plane crash along with his fiancée on a flight from Detroit to Phoenix.
My hope is we won’t soon forget the deep history of this league....and the stories waiting to be told; the good, the bad and the ugly.
Installments of the “NBA Flashback” series will be updated often (maybe weekly) at HOOPSWORLD and will be more interviewed based once the season rolls around and player/coach access is at more of a premium. By telling the past, hopefully you can read and maybe even see how that part of history unfolded. Maybe some of you will even re-live those times.
Those times often start with, "Do you remember the time....."
But until then, feel free to drop me a line if there are past angles you would like to see explored in the series.
