Von Wafer sat in front of his corner locker with his headphones on, watching game film about an hour before tip-off. No one around him. No talking. Just him in his own little hoopsworld.

It was last year in Portland. He’d arrived that February for rookie Taurean Green in a trade from Denver, a 6’5 NBA vagabond who’d seen stints with the Lakers, Colorado 14ers of the NBDL, Clippers, Nuggets and finally the Blazers all in a three year span.

Yet for his brief time in Portland – appearing in a whole eight games – that's my lasting memory of Wafer: Sitting. Headphones. Game film.

Every game.

Obviously he’s much more than those three descriptions. I’d heard from a fellow writer in Denver that he could shoot. Now I know there is even more to his game than that. Never thought I’d write these words but, where would Houston be without Von Wafer?

He’s played in 57 games, 11 starts and is having a career-year averaging 9.6 points and is shooting 40% from beyond the arc in roughly 19 minutes per game.

I’m happy for Wafer. A guy like that who has been around only to surely make a lasting impression on a playoff team like the Rockets – that’s a great story.

Forget the shooting.

At the McDonald's Dunk Competition back in 2003, Wafer finished second behind some guy named LeBron James in the event. Name rings a bell.

Six years later, Von can still get up – faux-hawk and all - as LaMarcus Aldridge found out on the baseline on Sunday in Houston.

By the way, the Blazers clinched a playoff spot in the loss to the Rockets. Guess I should mention that.
